The History of the Game of Snooker

The game of Snooker dates to the 19th century billiards and its development is related to British soldiers in India , while its name is related to the British Colonel Sir Neville Francis Fitzgerald Chamberlain in 1875. The word 'snooker' was army slang for a first-year cadet.
Snooker championships date back to 1916. The first professional world championship was established in 1927.
Snooker is immensely popular in England , second only to football amongst television viewers. It is also popular in Ireland , Australia , Canada , South Africa and recently also in Mainland China .

The World Professional Billiards and Snooker Association (WPBSA), founded in 1968 as the Professional Billiard Players' Association, is the governing body for the professional game. Its subsidiary, World Snooker, organizes the professional tour. The amateur game is governed by the International Billiards and Snooker Federation (IBSF).
